Thank God This Was Just a Movie

In one of the scariest scenarios imaginable the U.S. and Russia are on the brink of an all out nuclear war due to a computer glitch of all things.

Director Sidney Lumet and actor Henry Fonda team up again for another brilliant movie. "Fail-Safe" is the earliest movie I've ever seen in which technology brings peril to humanity. This movie could be a two-hour version of a great yet scary episode of The Twilight Zone.

The U.S. military suffered a computer glitch during a routine flight run of six Vindicator Bombers. These aircraft are high flying bombers carrying two twenty-ton hydrogen bombs. During their routine flight a UFO was sighted near Hudson's Bay. Even though most UFO's are just stray commercial planes or flocks of birds, all UFO's are treated as hostile and the Vindicator Bombers are scrambled to various points around Russia called "Fail-Safe Points." If they get an order to go in they proceed to invade Russia and drop their payload. The orders come through a fail-safe box aboard each aircraft so that orders to strike are positively verified. Even though the UFO was just a wayward commercial jet, a computer malfunction caused the Vindicator Bomber pilots to continue to their target of Moscow.

It was nothing but tension from that point on as every high ranking member from the U.S. government tried to get a handle on the situation. If they couldn't divert their bombers the bombers were sure to destroy Moscow and cause a nuclear war that would leave hundreds of millions dead.

"Fail-Safe" was thick with drama and heavy with monumental decisions that had to be made. It wasn't a desired scenario for anyone except maybe the stubbornest of war hawks. I watched with bated breath to see what would be the outcome. Could we avert disaster or would the two superpowers bring the world to ruin. Man this was a superb movie for anyone with the heart to watch.

Can't re-watch it again

I was 13-14 when I watched this movie. It's a long movie if I recall it correctly. I was so moved by it's theme, so I watched it all. I had strong feelings of sadness and sympathy towards little robot David that wanted to be a real child and to have a mom to love him. And that little bear ... I cried during some scenes. I don't ...
