The Rookie (1990)

Nick Pulovski (Clint Eastwood) is a cop, who is presently assigned to the auto theft division and who for the most part of his career has not done anything worthwhile. But when he discovers that a man named Strom (Raul Julia) is the brains behind a major car theft and chop shop ring, he sees this as his opportunity to do something. After his partner Powell (Hal Williams) is killed, the case is then transfered to homicide, so he is taken off the case. And he is assigned a new partner, David Ackerman (Charlie Sheen). a cop who has just recently been promoted to detective. But Pulovski feeling as if Strom is his, and decides to continue pursuing him, but Ackerman who tries to play by the rules is not sure what to do, and he is also a little afraid because of a childhood incident.

CHEER! - (8 stars out of 10)

The stage curtains open ...

The early 90's was a good time for action films and this entry starring Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen holds it own very well and still stands up by today's standards. It has it's share of memorable moments and quotable lines like any of the films from that time. "The Rookie" is a fun watch and a recommend.

When officer Nick Pulovski's (Eastwood) partner is gunned down in the line of duty, he is joined by a wet-behind-the-ears rookie, David Ackerman (Sheen) - the son of a wealthy man. Together, they pursue Strom (Raul Julia), a chop shop operator and orchestrator of multiple grand theft auto's, the man who is also responsible for killing Pulovski's partner. As Ackerman learns and progesses under Pulovski's tutelage, the two become close friends. However, Ackerman is haunted from a childhood incident that resulted in the death of his brother and he finds himself faced with a major crossroad in his life as the two cops work together to take down Strom and his operation forever.

I really enjoyed this movie. There were parts that were clearly over the top and and other parts that were controversial. Then again, most of the action films of that time were very similar in that respect, so it fit right in. Clint Eastwood brought his usual sneer and witticism to his role as the senior cop and Charlie Sheen was perfect as the rookie struggling with his past. I also enjoyed the smaller role of Lara Flynn Boyle as Sheen's wife. She was on her game in this one. There is some excellent pyrotechnics in this film with a memorable explosion that served to be the highlight of the movie.

I watched this when it was released to theaters back in 1990 and I bought it the day it was released to VHS (yeah, I'm that old) and have watched it many times since. It is a personal favorite of mine and a worthy film in the Clint Eastwood catalog. A high recommend.

Can't re-watch it again

I was 13-14 when I watched this movie. It's a long movie if I recall it correctly. I was so moved by it's theme, so I watched it all. I had strong feelings of sadness and sympathy towards little robot David that wanted to be a real child and to have a mom to love him. And that little bear ... I cried during some scenes. I don't ...
