My dad rarely spoke of his wartime experiences. We knew he had his own version of a "Queeg" and that off Okinawa a Kamikaze came so close to his ship that he could see the pilots face.
Imagine my surprise when in my 20's I came across an old carboard box forgotten somewhere in a corner. Inside was the flag from his ship, retired due to damage and a card , yellowed with age, with the following words handwritten by my father:
"October 30, 1944
This is the flag flown by USS Zane in February, 1944 during the first days of the assault on Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshal Islands. The Zane and Chandler were the first American warships to go into Eniwetok via deep entrance, preceding the cruisers and battleships. The Officer of the Deck at Battle Stations was Herman Wouk (then) Ltn. JG, USNR."
Feeling I had discovered a piece of American history, I had the card photocopied onto silver and had the flag framed where it proudly hangs today in my living room.
I so wanted to live up to my father that after graduating Columbia law school I volunteered to join the Israeli Navy where I served in both the first Lebanon war and the first Gulf war.

Anyone who missed this Speilberg film made 24 years ago MUST see this film which is much more relevant now than it was then. - JW
David, an artificial kid which is the first to have real feelings, especially a never-ending love for his "mother", Monica. Monica is the woman who adopted him as a substitute for her real son, who remains in cryo-stasis, stricken by an incurable disease. David is living happily with Monica and her husband, but when their real son returns home after a cure is discovered, his life changes dramatically.

Can't re-watch it again
I was 13-14 when I watched this movie. It's a long movie if I recall it correctly. I was so moved by it's theme, so I watched it all. I had strong feelings of sadness and sympathy towards little robot David that wanted to be a real child and to have a mom to love him. And that little bear ... I cried during some scenes.
